  • Missed the point of the space race

They tried to re-write history. May next time we’ll have American actors proud of their country’s achievements
  • It's about the man, not the mission

I remember before the movie even came out and people had a chance to see it, there was a fabricated controversy over the lack of a scene with the planting of the flag, and in the current climate, I can get why that would surface. It's a shame because it tainted what is a great cinematic contribution to the history of our space program(it probably didn't help that they released this film on the same weekend as Venom and A Star is Born). If you need it, I can assure you that America is well represented in the movie, but if you are looking for a flag waving, action filled, 'Go America' movie...this isn't it(but with 2019 being the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, there will be plenty of that to go around in months to come). This film is about the story of, as the title states, the first man to step on the moon, and if you approach it in any other way than that, you will be disappointed. This is a character study of a very complex person....but just a person, with all of the flaws and challenges of being a husband, and father, etc. That said, this doesn't even begin to describe what they've done in this movie...the launch sequences, the sounds, and detail will show any space buff things they've never seen before, and I will forever regret not seeing this in the theater. If the subject interests you, I can't recommend the book enough.

What a tragic state of affairs. Pretending it wasn’t the United States of America that landed on the moon first. Terrible garbage. Insult to every American.
  • Excellent movie - interesting look at a true hero

There seem to be an inordinate number of bogus reviews for First Man making all kinds of phony claims about the movie and its director. The reality is that it’s a well done look at Neil Armstrong as a pilot, a father and husband throughout his career. Armstrong is portrayed as a brilliant pilot, a good man, and a human father/husband who sometimes struggles to connect with his family in the midst of becoming the most famous man of his time. There is nothing about the movie that is remotely negative about Armstrong, NASA, the Apollo program, or the other astronauts except that they are portrayed as ordinary people doing extraordinary things. My only complaint about the movie is that the lighting seems to be unnecessarily dark in some scenes. If you are in to the Apollo program and the history of spaceflight you will probably like this movie a lot.
  • a masterpiece

the first film about space flight to give a visceral sense of how dangerous it was. also and unsentimental look at the emotional toll of the danger, year after year. magnificnt acting by all involved.
  • Disappointing, but good

Not what I expected at all, but good movie. It was a bit too much about Neil Armstrong's family issues (though it was important to show) and not enough about the mission itself and the people who made it happen.
  • Worth the View
